Data & IT Services

The Client

ASDA is one of the UK’s top 4 supermarket retailers by value, with an estate of over 650 superstores, supermarkets, home living, petrol filling stations, distribution centres and more. It is currently majority owned by Walmart in the US, and has stringent IT requirements and security policies throughout the operation.

The Project

ASDA went to market to engage a supplier who could complete a full turnkey design, supply, install, commission and test programme to future-proof its entire estate with a world-class WiFi service based on a Wave2 specification access point.

The project aimed to replace ALL legacy Wireless, copper and fibre infrastructure. The implementation was split into two separate phases across two financial years. Phase One would cover over 240 of the largest format stores in a rapid rollout of 3 months compressed timescales.

The Outcome

Elecomm were successful in winning this project which comprised the following:

  • Over 22,000 Access Points planned, procured, installed and commissioned
  • Over 300Km of OM3 Fibre installed
  • Over 2,000Km of Cat6a Ethernet copper cabling installed
  • Over 250 field engineers working at the peak of the project
  • Over 15 office based staff working exclusively for the period

The full project was delivered on time in very difficult circumstances. Elecomm had Principal Designer and CDM responsibilities on every site, covering both night time and day time shift patterns and weekend work with restricted access patterns.

The total project value was in excess of £8m across the multiple phases, and was certainly one of the most challenging and ambitious projects that the retail industry has seen in recent years. The outcome has been a resounding success, allowing ASDA to focus on its forward looking strategy of mobile and mobility applications to improve the customer experience.
